Wildlife Habitat Advisor Program

"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow. To plant native plants is to believe in the resilience and beauty of your local environment."

A free service that promotes wildlife-friendly spaces.

With the ever-increasing loss of natural habitats across central Maryland, ASCM is co-sponsoring Wildlife Habitat Advisors Program (WHAP) with the Frederick Bird Club to build a network of properties that prioritize wildlife sustainability.

WHAP provides individuals and communities with guidance from a trained, volunteer habitat advisor for how to incorporate wildlife-friendly habitats into their landscape and garden planning. No space is too small or too large! Whether it’s a balcony, a garden bed, a whole yard or an entire community development, birds, pollinators, and other wildlife will soon adopt these optimized spaces.

Getting started is easy! Simply click on the “Request a Visit” button below to connect with a volunteer advisor who will empower you to transform your outdoor space into a wildlife-friendly habitat tailored to your unique goals.

 How the process works:

  • Schedule a one-hour visit,

  • You and the advisor will walk the property to discuss characteristics of your property, gardening for wildlife best practices, your goals, priorities and timing, and answer your questions,

  • Your advisor will follow-up with a comprehensive written report summarizing the discussion and recommendations, and

  • Advisors remain available to answer questions and offer further consultations as needed.
